Wholesale Club 101: Product Visibility

Product visibility is key for stores that sell both B2B and B2C. If you’re not familiar with it, you’ve come to the right place! This post dives into what product visibility is, how it works, and how it’s set up in Wholesale Club.

What is product visibility and how does it work?

Product visibility is the ability to show products to (or hide products from) certain customer groups. It’s a granular level of control over product appearance that some ecommerce sellers need in their stores.

While the concept of product visibility is pretty straightforward, its actual functionality can vary widely depending on the platform or app you’re using. If you’re a Shopify merchant, you’re going to need an app (like Wholesale Club!) to give you the ability to control product visibility. Other ecommerce platforms may have product visibility functionality built into product listings.

Why would a wholesale business need product visibility functionality?

Product visibility is especially important for stores that sell both B2B and B2C. There are plenty of instances where a merchant may want to show a product to a retail customer but hide it from a wholesale customer, or vice versa.

For example, on the B2B side, a store might sell a certain product in cases of 12, but on the B2C side, that product is only available in single quantities. Or perhaps a wholesaler sells a bulk, unlabelled version of an item, but for retail customers, that product is always branded.

There’s also the situation where a merchant may only want certain products available to certain B2B customers. Perhaps there are exclusive products that only the highest-spending buyers get access to, or differently branded products for different wholesale customers. These types of scenarios require a business to carefully track who can see what products, ie, product visibility!

How does product visibility work in Wholesale Club?

First, we have to mention that product visibility is a feature available on the Premium Plan. So if you’re on the Basic or Professional Plan and you want to use product visibility, you’ll need to upgrade. It’s worth it, though, because upgrading gets you all the features Wholesale Club has to offer.

Product Visibility is super easy to set up in Wholesale Club. You can show products and collections only to wholesale customers who are logged into their accounts and have been tagged with a certain tag. You just create a rule, associate a tag, and pick the products or collections you want the rule to apply to. That’s it!
