Merchant Spotlight: My Backyard Decor

Christine Cobb is the owner of My Backyard Decor, an online ecommerce store primarily curating outdoor decor products from US-based manufacturers. The store began business in May 2018.

According to Christine, products and vendors are chosen because they represent good quality with reasonable prices and good customer service. She was looking for an addition/alternative to their Amazon FBA business. After she researched Shopify, she decided it was a good platform and then began reaching out to vendors through trade shows and personal contact.

“Trying to compete with large online stores (Overstock, Wayfair, Walmart, etc.) is challenging, with their cost structures and shipping capability,” Christine says. “We needed to offer something that they cannot offer – personal service.”

My Backyard Decor provides a phone number on their website that many times gets answered by Christine herself, and they treat all issues and questions as they would want to be treated. That resonates with customers.

Another method of engaging their customers is by using Ultimate Special Offers on their website. Christine said since My Backyard Decor works with many vendors that ship the products, they needed a solution for creating offers with many different variables.

“We price our products with shipping included and the default is one item being shipped,” she said. “However some vendors can ship multiple items together which share the shipping cost. We use USO to encourage multiple items and then pass the savings on to the customer.”

Christine particularly likes to use the quantity discounts offered through the Volume offer type. She likes that the offer shows up on the product page.

Prior to Ultimate Special Offers, My Backyard Decor used discount codes but it was not ideal. Ultimate Special Offers’ setup was relatively easy and questions were answered promptly by Orbit support, Christine says.

Though Ultimate Special Offers was the first sales app Christine used for My Backyard Decor, she advocates for experimentation.

“Try different things to increase sales but don’t be afraid to abandon products/techniques/apps that are not working,” she shared. “Keep apps to a minimum and regularly review their usefulness – not just pure profits but also time savers.”
