You set the target amount and pick up to 8 product choices for the free gift. You also control the messaging that goes along with the gift.
Why offer a free gift with purchase?
People love free stuff! It’s cliched because it’s true.
Gifts with purchase increase Average Order Value (AOV). By promising a gift with a target cart amount, customers are more likely to spend more to hit the goal and get the free item. This means higher AOV overall.
They offer an opportunity to move merchandise. If you’ve overbought or just have a surplus of an item, it makes a perfect free gift! It’s a great way to clear out some space in your inventory.

- What gift products will you offer?
- How will you promote this offer to your shoppers?

Free gift with purchase offer tips
Be strategic about the target amount
Check your Shopify analytics to find out the AOV for your store, and set the spend goal higher than this amount. This ensures the free gift helps to raise your AOV!
Choose items that require re-purchase
When you offer gifts, you can view these products as free samples. It’s best to use products that are single use or require repurchase, like cosmetics or food. This way, the customer falls in love with the product and is inclined to return to your store for more!
Use high-value, low-cost gifts where possible
The higher the value of the gift, the more likely it is that a customer will want to spend the target amount in order to receive it for free. But if you choose an item that costs you a lot, you’ll be cutting into your margins. Make sure the free gifts have value to the shopper, but not a huge cost to you to ensure that you’re making strong margins on the offer.
Test variations on the offer
Try offering different gifts and setting different spend amounts to see which combinations are the most successful. Testing out variations of free gift offers will help you determine what gifts have the most value in the eyes of your customers and what is most effective at raising AOV.
